Newrath, Co. Kilkenny - Prehistoric pottery scanning

Excavations in advance of the N25 Waterford bypass, on behalf of the Waterford City Council and the National Roads Authority, revealed the presence of an early Bronze Age cist burial within a ring-ditch.  The cist contained the cremated remains of an adult male buried within an inverted and near complete vase urn, the first such urn found in south Kilkenny.  The pottery was analysed with the help of external specialists, Eoin Grogan and Helen Roche and was illustrated using the innovative technique of 3D scanning.  Several sherds of a second, well used, urn were recovered from the overlying cairn material.
