Low Moss Barrage Balloon

Low Moss Barrage Balloon Depot, East Dunbartonshire

This World War II barrage balloon depot and barracks were evaluated by Headland in advance of development. Although much had been demolished in previous decades our remit was to identify and evaluate the significance of any surviving features. The camp used to be a part of the Clyde anti-aircraft defences and it supplied and maintained barrage balloons for the whole of Scotland.  A large proportion of the buildings were associated with billeting service personnel and administration but the site would also have had sheds in which balloons could be test inflated and stored.

Other features associated with the site’s use as a barrage balloon depot include numerous concrete tethering blocks with iron fixings. These have been reused in recent years to delimit several of the main thoroughfares.
