Arnol Blackhouses

The blackhouses of  Arnol, Historic Scotland

This research report by Headland’s Dr Tim Holden was commissioned to complement the extension to the blackhouse museum in Arnol, Isle of Lewis. The majority of blackhouses on Lewis are now abandoned ruins but they represent the culmination of a long tradition of buildings in the north and west of Scotland.  This research and subsequent publication presents both a detailed record of the buildings in Arnol and an essential document for all those wishing to study traditional longhouses in the future.
