Irish Waterways Survey

As a part of a Waterways Ireland initiative Headland undertook a detailed survey of architectural, engineering and industrial features on four major Irish canals :  The Grand Canal Barrow Line and Barrow Navigation, The Shannon-Erne Waterway, The Royal Canal and The Grand Canal. Covering approximately 475 km of waterway by foot or by boat our team mapped and recorded over 1,200 structures of heritage significance including canal locks, bridges, aqueducts, milestones, warehouses, lock-keepers cottages and mills.

Through a GIS system the client now has a fully digitised resource that, together with our recommendations on conservation issues, will assist them in the management of the canals as a recreational resource into the foreseeable future.
