Clackmannon Bridge, Kincardine

A programme of site investigations were undertaken in advance of construction of the Clackmannon Bridge and its associated approach roads, over the Forth Estuary, Scotland. As part of the archaeological mitigation, two set piece excavations were undertaken.

The first required the excavation of a previously demolished 17th century laird’s house at Garlet, Kilbagie while the second required the topsoil stripping of 4 Ha around a series of prehistoric and medieval features at  Meadowend Farm, near Clackmannan.  Over 2000 fragments of Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery were recovered from features that included roundhouses, pits,  postholes and two medieval corn drying kilns.

With a considerable land take of both sides of the Firth of Forth communication with land owners and their agents was an important element in bringing the project in on time and to budget. Garlet has been accepted for publication by the Tayside and Fife Archaeological Journal. Work on publications of Meadowend farm is ongoing.
